PENNSYLVANIA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

PHS MCLEAN LIBRARY

Around 2010, my work found its way to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society through a serendipitous chain of connections. Margaret Sadler, a PHS Board member, had toured my home during a Walter Durham-designed house tour and inquired about the botanical artwork. She handed me her card with a simple directive: PHS needed to know about me.

This introduction led to Lisa Stephano, then Chief Marketing Director at PHS, commissioning a piece as a retirement gift for Jane Pepper, the organization's legendary president. Knowing Jane was a Buddhist, I created a work centered on the Bodhi Tree. Lisa's enthusiasm for the piece opened another door—she introduced me to Janet Evans, Associate Director at the PHS McLean Library, where they were developing a new exhibition space in the lobby. They invited me to inaugurate the space with a solo show titled A New American Botanical.
